USS BREWTON FF-1086


USS Brewton (FF-1086) is the 35th ship of the Knox ocean escort (FF-1052) class. Commissioned on 10 July 1972, Brewton's primary mission is anti-submarine warfare. The ship has inherent versatility, and has proven to be capable of performing the many tasks assigned to fast frigates in time of peace, as well as in time of war. Brewton's overall length is 438 ft, beam is 46'9", displacement in excess of 4,000 tons, nautical speed in excess of 27 knots. Brewton is outfitted to operate the SH-2F Light Airborne Multi-Purpose Systems (LAMPS) helicopter in support of her mission. Brewton is also capable of anti-surface, anti-air, and naval gunfire support. Brewton's primary mission is anti-submarine warfare (ASW), outfitted with several underwater detecting abilities using installed sonar equipment systems. Current systems include the AN/SQS-26CX hull mounted sonar, the AN/SQS-35V independent variable depth sonar, and the AN/SQR-18 (TACTASS) streaming sonar utilized with operations made possible by the deployment of the AN/SQS-35V (IVDS). Brewton's anti-warfare abilities are enforced through installed weapons systems. Anti-surface enforcement is provided by the ASROC launching system, enabling missile delivery for hostile submarine and surface engagement. There are 4 MK-32 torpedo tubes outfitted to provide weapon delivery for close-in warfare engagement, one 20MM gatling gun (CIWS) for defense of incoming missiles and a 5"54 cal. gun used for anti-ship defense and gunfire support. Brewton is manned by 18 officers, and 275 enlisted personnel. Onboard services available are the post office, ship's store, barber, berthing quarters, dining area, laundry, TV lounge, universal weight machine and limited work-out space. Brewton is a single screw propulsioned ship, drive shaft at 35,000 horsepower from steam turbine provided by two installed boilers. On the average, she requires approximately $18,000 a day to pay incurred cost of fuel, meals, crew's earnings. Brewton is in destroyer squadron 25 home ported out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Brewton has to-date deployed 7 times on West Pacific assignments, and one South Pacific excursion.
