LT JOHN C. BREWTON
USS BREWTON (FF-1086) is named for LT John C. Brewton, who was born in Mobile,
Alabama September 5, 1943. After enlisting in the U.S. Naval Reserve during 1966,
he received his commission as an Ensign from Officers Candidate School in April 1967.
Following arduous training in late 1969, LT(JG) Brewton was serving as Platoon Officer
of a SEAL team in combat against Communist forces in South Vietnam. In November 1969,
Brewton led his platoon in a fierce action against a numerically superior force.
Though suffering painful back and arm wounds, he continued to direct his forces and refused
medical treatment for himself until all his men were attended to. After the action,
LT(JG) Brewton was evacuated to a Saigon field hospital for treatment. Despite a
courageous fight for his life, he succumbed to his wounds on January 11, 1970. As a
result of his actions, LT(JG) Brewton was promoted to Lietenant and awarded the Silver
Star for "valiant and courageous fighting spirit in the face of grave enemy
opposition and serious personal injuries."
