CHANGE OF COMMAND 17 AUG. 1988
Captain Lyon, Honored Guests, Officers and Crew of USS Brewton.
According to Navy regulations, at the time of turning over command, the
Commanding Officer to be relieved will call all hands to muster, read his
orders of detachment and turn over the command to his successor, who will
read his orders and assume command. The purpose of this ceremony is simple,
to communicate the passage of absolute authority and responsibility from one
officer to another. Before I carry out the transfer of command I would like
to share a few memories of the last 26 months. Over the course of that time
we have certainly enjoyed our share of success. A carrier battle group
deployment in which we excelled in anti-submarine warfare to the point we
were runner-up for the prestigious COMSEVENTHFLT ASW Award. The dramatic
rescue at sea of Professor Dixon Stroup from the Hokulea, and the fast
paced work-up that led to our current deployment. Along with those
successes in our mission, we have enjoyed personal success. I look with
pride on many of our Second Class Petty Officers who were Seaman and Fireman
when I assumed command. There have been promotions, awards and selections
too numerous to mention.
