                        DECOMMISSIONING CEREMONY

Each unit of the Navy holds two unique ceremonies during the course of its
existence. The commissioning ceremony bearing the promise for a bright
future, and the decommissioning ceremony, signifying the end of an era,
honoring all of the men and women who have given their time, their energy,
and, for some, their lives, to fulfill and surpass the aspirations of those
who stood in the commissioning ceremony. The decommissioning ceremony is
not prescribed specifically by Navy regulations, but is, instead, an
honored product of Naval tradition. Custom has established that this
ceremony be formal and impressive - a solemn occasion on which we pause
to reflect upon the rich heritage of this ship and the United States Navy.

                         COMMISSIONING PENNANT

The commissioning pennant dates from the 17th century, when Dutch Admiral
Van Tromp defeated an English fleet in 1652 and lashed a broomstick from
the aftertruck of his flagship to signify that he had "swept" the English
from the seas. A year later, when the fortunes of war had reversed, the
English admiral hoisted a horsewhip to indicate he had subdued his
adversary. Thus, the narrow "coachwhip" pennant has become the
international symbol of a ship of war.

                        USS BREWTON (FF-1086)

USS BREWTON (FF-1086) is a highly capable and versatile Anti-Submarine
platform, the 35th KNOX class Frigate. Especially designed for
Anti-Submarine Warfare, BREWTON is also capable of Anti-Surface Warfare,
Anti-Air Warfare, and Naval Gunfire Support.

BREWTON is equipped with the Navy's sophisticated sonar systems, which
provide for long range passive and active tracking of submarines. The
ship is outfitted to operate the SH-2F Light Airborne Multi-Purpose
Systems (LAMPS) helicopter in support of its Anti-Submarine mission.

BREWTON is manned by 18 officers and 260 enlisted. Facilities for the
crew include berthing and messing facilities, laundry, ship's store,
barber shop, and lounge.

BREWTON is powered by a single screw driven by a 35,000 shaft horsepower
steam turbine. Two boilers provide superheated 1,200 pounds per square
inch pressure steam to drive the main engine. Gyro controlled fin
stabilizers on both sides of the underwater hull actively stabilize the
ship.

BREWTON's keel was laid on 2 October 1970 at Avondale Shipyards Inc. in
Avondale, Louisiana. BREWTON was christened on 23 June 1971 and
commissioned on 8 July 1972.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

In an illustrious 20 year career, BREWTON made nine Western Pacific, one
Southwest Pacific, and one Southeast Pacific deployments, visiting nearly
thirty foreign countries in the Pacific Rim and Indian Ocean. Some
historical highlights include hosting the Today show crew for on-location
broadcasts from Hawaii in 1974, transporting the remains of the Unknown
Soldier from Hawaii to NAS Alameda, California in 1984, and actively
participating in the Naval Blockade of Iraq from August to November of 1991
in support of Operation Desert Shield.

BREWTON is named in honor of LT John C. Brewton. John Brewton enlisted in
the Naval Reserve in 1966. He was accepted as an Officer Candidate and
commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in April of 1967. He had been
an avid skin diver in college, and this interest led him to volunteer for
the Underwater Demolition Team and later for SEAL Team training. In late
1969, following arduous training and a promotion, LT(jg) Brewton was serving
as Platoon Officer of a SEAL team in combat against Communist forces in
South Vietnam. On 24 November 1969, LT(jg) Brewton led his platoon in fierce
action against a numerically superiour force. Despite suffering painful
arm and back wounds, he directed the disposition of his forces, and refused
medical treatment for himself until all of his men had been tended. After
receiving an additional wound, he continued to direct helicopter attacks
against enemy positions from a forward vantage point.

After the action, LT(jg) Brewton was evacuated to a Saigon field hospital
for treatment. Despite a courageous fight for life, he succumbed to his
wounds on 11 January 1970.

As a result of the action which led to his death, LT(jg) Brewton was
posthumously promoted to Lieutenant and awarded the Silver Star for
"valiant leadership and courageous fighting spirit in the face of grave
enemy opposition and serious personal injuries." He also earned the Bronze
Star with one gold star and a Combat "V", the Purple Heart with one gold
star, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Vietnam Service Ribbon with three
bronze stars, and the National Defense Service Medal. In addition,
Lieutenant Brewton was awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the
Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

                    Sep 90-Jul 92 CDR C.A. Jones, Jr.

The design selected to represent USS BREWTON (FF-1086) is based almost
entirely on the Brewton family Coat of Arms. The wolf, representing
swiftness and fighting spirit, was incorporated into the body of the shield
from its former position atop the crest. The star, symbolic of honor and
achievement, was in the grasp of the wolf but has been repositioned to
permit inclusion of the Trident, symbol of Sea Power.

The left side of the shield is red, for fortitude and the right side is
blue, for loyalty, fidelity, and truth. Silver chevrons across the field
denote peace and nobility.

The motto "Dedicated, Determined, Prepared" was considered appropriate not
only to the U.S. Navy SEALS with whom he served but to John C. Brewton
himself, and as desirable characteristics of this U.S. Navy Fast Frigate
named in his honor.
